Bio

Barry Bogin is Professor of Biological Anthropology, Health and Lifespan Research Centre, Loughborough University, UK. Prior to joining the Loughborough faculty, Bogin was the William E. Stirton Professor and Professor of Anthropology at the Department of Behavioral Sciences, University of Michigan-Dearborn. His research area is human physical growth and development.  Since the 1970s Bogin has been working with Guatemalan Maya families living in Guatemala and the United States. Maya children in the United States are much taller with most of the increase due to longer legs.  This is a sign of improved health.  But, the children are also heavier – about 50% are overweight and/or obese.  Maya American children may be at risk for weight problems now, and health problems later in life, due to intergenerational metabolic impairements interacting with United States diets, patterns of physical activity, and work.  Another area of Bogin's research is the evolution of the pattern of human growth.  Human beings evolved two new stages of development – childhood and adolescence – stages not found in other mammals, even in our closest primate cousins.   The unusual physical, behavioral, and emotional characteristics of children and adolescents help us to grow into healthy and productive adult, but only if the special needs of children and adolescents are met.
Please refer to Bogin's web page for publications.

Bogin received the University of Michigan-Dearborn Distinguished Faculty Research Award in 1993, and the Distinguished Teaching Award in 1998.  In 1999, he received the Michigan Association of Governing Boards Distinguished Faculty Award.  In 2004 Bogin was awarded the William E. Stirton Professorship, the highest academic honor of the University of Michigan-Dearborn.
