Bio

Katerina Semendeferi is an Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology and the Graduate Program in Neurosciences at UCSD.  Originally from Greece, she completed her graduate and postgraduate work in Anthropology, Neurosciences and the program in Cognitive Neuroscience at the University of Iowa and then joined the faculty at UCSD in 1997.  In the 1990’s she initiated two large scale projects.  One project involved the coordinated effort to collect postmortem ape brain specimens from zoos across the U.S. with the help of veterinarians and species survival coordinators. The other project involved application of structural Magnetic Resonance Imaging on postmortem ape brain specimens and on living apes in collaboration with the Yerkes Primate Research Center.  These initiatives introduced noninvasive techniques developed for the study of human neural tissue to the study of the hominoid brain and provided material that led to multiple studies published by her laboratory and others in the area of brain evolution.  Her research on the comparative neuroanatomy and evolution of the brain in humans and apes explores species specific patterns of organization in neural systems involved in complex cognitive and emotional processes.
