Bio

Oliver Ryder holds the Kleberg Genetics Chair and is Head of the Genetics Division at the Center for Reproduction of Endangered Species (CRES), part of the Zoological Society of San Diego and is also an adjunct professor in biology at UCSD. He oversees the Frozen Zoo®, a unique biological resource collection, and directs the cytogenetics and molecular genetics research activities at CRES. In 2000 he organized the "Genetic Resources for the New Century" conference from which a book is currently being produced.  Recently, he partnered in the initiation of an Integrated Primate Biomaterials Resource (IPBIR) to assist in the provision of genetic samples from primates to the broader research community (http://health.sdsc.edu:8080/IPBIR) with support from NSF. His research interests include comparative genomic studies, especially as they apply to conservation efforts, the genetic basis for mammalian adaptation, and strategic planning for conservation of biological diversity, especially at the level of intraspecific genetic variation.  He has recently been advocating the development of “conservation genomics” including large scale sequencing efforts to provide insights into the evolution and conservation of endangered mammalian and avian species. He is a member of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Peninsular Bighorn Sheep Recovery Team and the Asian Wild Horse Management Group. He serves on numerous consultative committees for conservation of a variety of animal taxa (including apes), conservation breeding efforts, genetic resource banking, and zoological systematics for national and international wildlife agencies and NGO's. He is past President (2001) of the American Genetic Association and now serves as the executive vice president.
