In this book, Kelly challenges the preconception that hunter-gatherers conform to a single type, be that of Paleolithic relics living in a state of nature, the original affluent society, or downtrodden proletariat.  Instead, he uses the paradigm of human behavioral ecology to analyze diversity in forager diet, mobility, sharing, land tenure, technology, exchange, male-female relations, division of labor, marriage, descent, and political organization.  He argues for an approach to prehistory that uses archaeological data to test theory rather than one that uses ethnographic analogy to reconstruct the past.
