Rachel I. Mayberry is a professor of linguistics at the University of California San Diego where she directs the Laboratory for Multi-Modal Language Development. Prof Mayberry investigates the critical period for language from a variety of perspectives. Her current work is focused on the effects of language deprivation on development of the brain language system. She studies language acquisition and processing from a multimodal perspective that includes sign language, spoken and written language and co-speech gesture. Her work has been continually funded for the past three decades and is widely published across a variety of disciplines. At UC San Diego, Prof Mayberry is affiliated with the Center for Research on Language, the Center for Research and Training in Anthropogeny, the Interdisciplinary Program in Cognitive Science, the Human Development Program, and the Joint Doctoral Program in Language and Communicative Disorders.
