Lacrimation (shedding of tears, or "crying") in response to intense emotional stimuli is very common in humans, but has not so far not been reported in other hominids. Lacrimation in response to eye irritation is common to other species and is a protective response. It is unclear whether humans lacrimate more than other animals.
