David Perlmutter
Bio

David Perlmutter is Professor Emeritus (Department of Linguistics and Interdepartmental Program in Cognitive Science, UCSD). His research focuses on linguistic universals and typology in syntax, phonology, and morphology, addressing the question of how human languages differ and the ways they are all alike. He is best known for his work on the role of grammatical relations in clause structure and on the phonology and morphology of American Sign Language.  He has served as President of the Linguistic Society of America and on the editorial boards of 4 professional journals, and he has held fellowships from the Guggenheim and Killam Foundations, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the University of California, and the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences. He has held visiting professorships in France and Canada, the Edward Sapir Professorship at the Linguistic Institute of the Linguistic Society of America, and the Richard Turner Professorship of the Humanities at the U. of Rochester.
