David Woodruff- Bio
David Woodruff is a Professor of Biological Sciences and the former founding Chair of the Ecology, Behavior and Evolution Section at UC San Diego. His research focuses on animal species, their evolution and conservation. In the field of primate evolution, his group pioneered the use of non-invasive genotyping and applied it to studies of population structure, mating systems, phylogeography and phylogeny of chimpanzees, gibbons, marmosets and lemurs. He also demonstrated the first use of microsatellite variability to monitor genetic erosion in recently isolated populations of mammals. Currently, work continues on population viability and the response of species to climate change in Southeast Asia. Earlier research focused on the coevolution of human blood flukes (schistosomes) and their intermediate host snails. His two doctorates are from the University of Melbourne and he taught at Harvard before coming to San Diego. He is a fellow of the Linnean Society of London and of AAAS, serves on several editorial boards and advisory groups, and as a Trustee of the Zoological Society of San Diego.
