Kurt Benirschke
Bio

Kurt Benirschke is currently Professor Emeritus of Pathology and Reproductive Medicine at UCSD.  He was born in Glueckstadt Germany, attended different medical schools in Germany and graduated from the University of Hamburg in 1948 (M.D.), immigrated to USA in 1949.  House officer at Holy Name Hospital, Teaneck, NJ. Pathology residency training at Harvard Medical School 1951-1955.   !955-1960 Chairman Dept. of Pathology, Boston Lying-in Hospital.  Chairman of the Dept. of Pathology, Dartmouth Medical School 1960-1970.   Past Director of the Autopsy Service at UCSD and Past Chair of the Department of Pathology at UCSD.   He established the Center for Research on Endangered Species (CRES) at the San Diego Zoo and was Director of CRES 1976-1987.  Trustee, San Diego Zoo.  President of Zoological Society of San Diego 1998-2001. His currently active areas of interests include: perinatal human mortality with special reference to placental disease, and the comparative cytogenetics of mammals.
