His research focuses on the molecular genetics, pathophysiology, and evolution of mitochondrial energetics and is supported by NIH and NSF. His major areas of emphasis are the regulation and function of nuclear-encoded subunits of cytochrome c oxidase, mitochondrial disease, and the molecular evolution of genes of the respiratory complex, particularly in anthropoid primates. He is Assistant Editor of Mitochondria, and serves on the Editorial Board of Biochimica Biophysica Acta, and was previously Contributing Editor for Science. He is also Treasurer of the American Electrophoresis Society. He has served on a number of NIH and NSF study sections and site visit teams.
