Abstract:

In this paper, I argue that relaxed selection—an evolutionary process that contributes to the well-documented effects of gene duplication, diversification, and synergistic gene interactions in evolution—may have also played a significant role in the evolution of the extensive phenotypic plasticity and unprecedented neurological changes in human evolution that support language.
