The central theme is the balance between notions of "rule" and "representation" as the primary object of study in linguistic approaches to sound structure. Stephen R. Anderson traces these concepts - which play major roles in current phonological theory - from the beginnings of scientific linguistics in this century (in the work of Ferdinand de Saussure, Mikolai Kruszewski, Franz Boas, and others) through the present day. The result is a general history of the development of modern phonology.
