The ideal and practice of hospitality - special and positive treatment of some types of visitors - are, at least, very nearly universal among humans. To some degree hospitality has a motivation and function similar to trade. Hospitality is both a cause and consequence of the complexity of social order among humans. The archaeological record is largely silent on the advent of hospitality. Bonobo groups sometimes are non-hostile to strangers.
