After almost 15 years of coordinating this "improbable venture," CARTA Leadership has decided it is time to hand things over to the next generation with a leadership transition plan in place to ensure continued success.
By Lindsay Hunter, CARTA Community Engagement & Advancement Director
On June 14, 2022, UC San Diego/Salk Center for Academic Research and Training in Anthropogeny (CARTA) celebrated its outgoing leadership and introduced the new team with longtime CARTA Associate Director, Pascal Gagneux, stepping into the role of Executive Co-Director, effective July 1, 2022.

CARTA thanks everyone who has helped to make the improbable not only possible but SUCCESSFUL. We were greatly humbled by the kind remarks shared at the June 14th event, such as those by UC San Diego campus leaders Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences (VCHS) David Brenner and Vice Chancellor for Research (VCR) Corinne Peek-Asa; as well as by representatives from some of CARTA’s other institutional partners, including Salk Institute, the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC), and Greater Mahale Ecosystem Research & Conservation (GMERC); and UC San Diego Anthropogeny Graduate Specialization-Track students & alumna. What is clear from the themes that arose out of these comments, is that as a collaborative endeavor, CARTA’s success belongs to ALL OF US COLLECTIVELY and to EACH OF YOU INDIVIDUALLY, whatever your role.
It is both gratifying and appropriate that CARTA should exhibit supervenient emergent properties such as those observed in complex biological systems, where “the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.” And as the CARTA community continues to evolve and new properties arise, it is to be expected that our understanding of the human phenomenon will both grow, as well as appear to contract, as we appreciate how much more we have yet to learn. What will remain constant, however, is that CARTA shall not cease from our exploration.
