Diverticulosis has been described only in older human populations that do not ingest a high fiber diet.  A diverticulum is a pouch that leads off from the alimentary tract, lined by mucosa that communicates with the lumen of the gut. They develop either due to focal weakness of the bowel wall or due to increased intraluminal pressure related to chronic constipation. They usually develop on the left side of the colon along the taenia coli. Most diverticulae are asymptomatic but sometimes may become inflamed. These lesions have not been described in non-human primates.
