Postpartum depression is a mental condition that can occur after giving birth. In humans, this depression can range from mild feelings of malaise to severe despair that can result in rejection of the infant, and even suicide. Postpartum depression is thought to be absent from great apes. However, it may be that appropriate measures have not yet been developed to examine this phenomenon.
