Defined as the rules of membership in a society and its constituent units (some or all of its statuses), law is found in all societies.  While a sense of fairness and possessive rights appear in other species, and surely are among the foundations of human law, the complexity of human status-role systems, with their associated rights and obligations, results in a substantial difference between humans and nonhuman primates.
The antiquity of human law is unknown.
