Expensive Tissue Hypothesis

Definition:

The proposal (Aiello & Wheeler, 1995) that reductions in metabolically costly tissues, particularly the gastrointestinal tract, can contribute to the energetic budget required for brain expansion. Current work treats this as one of several compensating factors, alongside dietary shifts, fat storage, extended life history, and cooperative provisioning, rather than a strict one-for-one trade-off.
