Annette Merle-Smith was introduced to CARTA by James Handelman of the Mathers Foundation in the late 90s, before it was formally established as CARTA. She began her involvement by supporting CARTA’s symposia. She then funded a major digitization project for CARTA’s Museum of Primatology. She also supported two graduate students yearly in CARTA’s Anthropogeny Specialization Track through the Merle-Smith Fellowship Program. Her longtime involvement was in Art Museum education and she served as a docent at the Princeton University Art Museum. Summers were spent in the Adirondacks, where her husband’s family had houses for many years and where she was involved with local environmental organizations.
