FZD8 (frizzled 8)

Hover over keys for definitions:Frizzled 8 (FZD8) belongs to a family of Wnt receptors highly expressed in the ventral telencephalon and the ventral diencephalon. 10 human lineage specific nucleotide changes in FZD8 enhancer region, called HARE5, were shown to cause differential expression in transgenic mouse embryos. Mice with the human HARE5, versus those with the Chimpanzee HARE5, showed an accelerated neural progenitor cell cycle and increased brain size. It is hypothesized that the changes in FZD8 expression altered the cell-cycle dynamics of stem cells involved in corticogenesis and may underlie distinct features of the human neocortex.
